What is Micro Trenching?

Cable laying is without question the largest civil engineering activity in Germany and probably in the world. It is therefore all the more important to be well equipped for this work in order to keep up with or even outdo the competition. An ideal tool for this purpose is the trencher.

Why a trencher?

As with most things, there are different options when it comes to carrying out cable laying. There are various methods of digging the trenches to lay the mostly fibre optic cords there. Many newcomers use one or more excavators for this task. Often this is because they already have an excavator or perhaps they have not informed themselves in detail.

If you want to be effective in laying cables, you should think about buying or renting a trencher for laying cables. Probably the most important advantage compared to an excavator is the speed at which you can dig the trenches. While an excavator can do about 300 metres on a good day, a trencher can do 900 metres a day. On average, you can say that a trencher is three times as fast as an excavator.

Furthermore, the widths of a trencher are variable. This means that you only have to dig the trench as wide as you need it and do not have to excavate the soil unnecessarily as you would with an excavator. This saving allows you to dig trenches more quickly, as you have to tear up less soil, and also to compact the trench more quickly after laying the squares, as you have to fill in less soil again. Both ensure that you can mill your route even faster and save even more time.

Laying cables with a Trenchmaster

Now these advantages are already extremely decisive when it comes to cable laying work, but they apply to almost all trenchers. So why choose the Trenchmeister? But of course we can not only score with experience in this field, but also with our modern technology and the necessary „know how“. For example, the GM 4 wheel/crawler has hydraulic roll compensation. This means that you are able to mill even on a mountain slope without any problems by moving one side of the machine upwards and thus regaining a straight starting position in which you can then continue milling without any worries.

If you mount a GM 600 R, a milling wheel, in addition to the GM 4, you can even move it hydraulically to the left and right on the rear crossbeam. This makes it possible to move the cutter on the rear crossbeam in the event of obstacles on the section to be milled, thus making the work easier.

Cable laying in general

When laying cables, the most important thing is to work cleanly. If the trenches are not dug properly, the cable cannot be laid properly either and the cable will be damaged over time because stones or the like will damage the cable from the outside. Since fibre optic cables are often not very large, there is a method that is often used when laying cables with trenchers. This is called „micro trenching“. In this process, the earth is only opened up to the extent that a fibre optic cable just fits into it. This method has several advantages:

Firstly, the time saved: as mentioned above, a trencher is one of the quickest ways to dig your trenches when building cables. Instead of using a trencher with a chain, which is also suitable for micro trenching, the speed is much better. Since the trench is only directed to the exact size of the cable, the excavation of the trench is reduced to a minimum. This ensures both faster milling and faster refilling of the trenches.

A second point is the reduced wear. Of course, wear is much less if you only have to dig a narrow trench instead of a large one. Since the chain is smaller, material is also saved here, which also minimises wear.
